Abstract

Two trials of external quality assessment for therapeutic drug monitoring were performed in 1996. A total of two specimens covering 26 test items were distributed. One specimen was distributed to 68 laboratories with a response of 82.3% in the first trial and the other specimen to 69 laboratories with a response of 85.5% in the second trial. Total twenty six test times including acetaminophen, amikacin, amitriptyline, carbamazepine, chloramphenicol, cyclosporine, digoxin, disopyramide, ethosuximide, free phenytoin, gentamicin, lidocaine, lithium, methotrexate, N-acetyl-procainamide, phenobarbital, phenytoin, primidone, procainamide, propranolol, quinidine, salicylate, theophylline, tobramycin, valproic acid, and vancomycin were evaluated. The results of two trials in 1996 were summarized as follows. 1. The number of institutes to perform therapeutic drug monitoring was less than 20% among all the members in the Korean Association of Quality Assurance for Clinical Pathology. 2. The most widely used analyzer was Abbott TDx system but the kinds of analyzers became various. 3. The average test item number per laboratory was around seven and the most common test items were digoxin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine, theophylline, and valproic acid.
