Sarcopenia of the Old Age

Abstract

One of the important changes of body composition with aging is the increase of fat mass and visceral fat and the decrease of muscle mass and strength. Sarcopenia, the age-related decline of muscle mass, strength, and quality, is associated with functional impairment, physical disability, and even mortality. However, the etiology and the pathogenesis, the diagnosis of sarcopenia are obscure. Today, sarcopenia is a matter of immense public concern for aging prevention. Its prevalence continues to rise, probably as a result of increasing elderly populations all over the world. This article provides an overview of the pathogenesis, and diagnosis, epidemiology, clinical results of sarcopenia.
