Abstract

Prolotherapy refers to the type of medical intervention in musculoskeletal pain that causes a proliferation of collagen fibers, as with those found in ligaments and tendons, as well as a with shortening of those fibers. Significant ligament or tendon injuries might result in connective tissue insufficiency. Load bearing on CTI can sometimes creates a malfunction, resulting in a chronic musculoskeletal pain condition. Prolotherapy is the injection of growth factors, or growth factor stimulators, into the fibro-osseous junction of the disabled ligament, tendon or intra-articular space to promote proliferation of the injured connective tissue or cartilages. Growth factor or growth factor stimulation injections promote tissue repair or growth, which are supposed to be complex proteins (poly-peptides) and have beneficial effects on human ligament, tendon, cartilage and bone. Prolotherapy may utilize either inflammatory or non-inflammatory mechanisms.
