Abstract

Guaifenesin (glyceryl guaiacolate) is widely used as an expectorant by reducing the viscosity and increasing the volume of bronchial secretions. It is usually used as a combination complex with acetaminophen, ephedrine, chlorpheniramine or dextromethorphan, and its known side effects are mostly mild including nausea, anorexia, abdominal discomfort, and somnolence. We experienced a case of a healthy woman, who encountered anaphylactic reaction to medicines including guaifenesin. Since concomitant drugs were ruled out with drug provocation test and skin test, we concluded guaifenesin as the culprit drug. Although guaifenesin, commonly used over-the-counter drug, is known to have a good tolerability and safety profile, patients as well as medical professionals should always be aware of the possibility of anaphylaxis.
