Value of supine cross-table lateral radiograph of abdomen in detection of ileocolic intussusception

Abstract

For the palin film adiographic detection of intussusception, Supine Cross-Table Lateral Radiograph(SCLR) ofabdomen has been introduced recently. Our study was done to evaluate the SCLR prospectively and tried to comparewith the conventional vertical beam radiograph of abdomen. In the 40 infants which were suspected as anintussusception clinically, conventional vertical beam radiograph of abdomen and SCLR were interpreted beforebarium reduction and analysed after barium reduction. As a result, sensitivity, specificity and overall accuracyof the vertical beam radiograph of abdomen only in the detection of ileocolic intussusception were 76%, 100% and 78%, those of the SCLR only were 65%, 100% and 68%, those of the conventional vertical beam radiograph plus theSCLR were 79%, 100% and 80%. Therefore we think that the SCLR would not be a useful complementary plain film inthe diagnosis of the ileocolic intussusecption.
