Abstract

PURPOSE: To assess the clinical characteristics in patients with premature ejaculation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
A total of 48 patients with premature ejaculation (mean age: 42.7 years) completed questionnaire which is a 19-item scale assessing anxiety for rapid ejaculation, ejaculatory latency during vaginal and oral intercourse and masturbation, patient and spouse's satisfaction for ejaculatory latency, and orgasm of patient and spouse.
RESULTS
The average frequency of sexual intercourse was 1.8 per week, which was similar to that of the age-matched normal adults. Anxiety for rapid ejaculation was noted in 79.2% of the patients. Most (91.7%) of the patients ejaculated within 1-2 minutes during vaginal intercourse. Premature ejaculation during oral intercourse and masturbation was noted in 77.8% and 77.8%, respectively. Ejaculatory latency during masturbation was significantly delayed compared to that during vaginal intercourse (p<0.05). Dissatisfaction for ejaculatory latency was noted in all of the patients and in 81.2% of their spouses. Frequency of having orgasm was decreased in spouses (never having in 27.1%, almost having in 4.2%, often having in 6.2%). The patients' attempts to delay ejaculatory latency were as follows; drinking alcohol (47.8%), having another idea during intercourse (39.6%), utilizing condom (29.2%) and intercourse frequently (20.8%).
CONCLUSIONS
These data may be helpful in establishing the clinical charateristics of the patients with premature ejaculation and formulation appropriate treatment plans.
