Premature ejaculation is the most common male sexual dysfunction. Recently, paroxetine, a potent serotonin reuptake inhibitor, has been suggested to be helpful for the patients with premature ejaculation. We evaluated the efficacy and safety of paroxetine (Seroxat(R)) in patients with premature ejaculation. A total of 14 potent men, 28 to 59 years old (mean age 40), with premature ejaculation were treated with oral paroxetine 20 mg a day for 4 weeks. The latent period of intravaginal ejaculation and patients' overall satisfaction were evaluated before and 4 weeks after medication. Paired t-tests were performed for a statistical analysis. The mean intravaginal ejaculation latency time (minutes) and patients' overall satisfaction score significantly increased from 1.5 and 4.3 before treatment to 6.7 and 5.6 after treatment ( p = .037 and p = 0.024), respectively. Sleepiness and gestrointestinal discomfort were noticed in two patients (14.3%); however, there were no serious adverse effects to stop medication. Paroxetine appears to be a safe and useful medication in the pharmacological treatment for the patients with premature ejaculation.
