BACKGROUND: Apolipoprotein E (Apo E) plays a central role in the hepatic clearance of Apo E rich lipoprotein (VLDL, chylomicron remnant, intermediate density lipoprotein) through LDL receptor. Apo E is present as three major isoforms, named Apo E2, E3, and E4. Apo E genotype is one of determinants of the serum triglyceride and cholesterol level due to their different binding affinity for LDL receptor, and highly variable among different populations.
METHODS
This study was undertaken to evaluation of plasma lipids depending on the Apo E genotype in 15 normal and 35 hyperlipidemic people by INNO-LiPA Apo kit.
RESULTS
The frequency of Apo E were epsilon3 0.857, epsilon2 0.071, and epsilon4 0.071, that did not different statistically from control group epsilon3 0.933 epsilon 0.033, epsilon4 0.033 (P>0.05). Serum concentration of Lp(a) in Apo E 3/2 group was significantly higher than in Apo E3/3 group of hyperlipidemic patients (P<0.05). Apo E3/2 genotype were observed in hypertriglyceridemic group. So epsilon2 allele was associated with a higher serum triglyceride and Lp(a) concentration.
CONCLUSIONS
It seems that epsilon2 allele plays an important role in triglyceride and Lp(a) concentration.
