Patterns of Helicobacter pylori Gastritis in Gastroduodenal Diseases
Abstract
-
BACKGROUND/AIMS: The patterns of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) gastritis vary according to their associated diseases. We investigated the patterns of H. pylori gastritis according to the gastroduodenal diseases.
METHODS
Twelve patients with gastritis, 25 with duodenal ulcer (DU), 21 with gastric ulcer (GU) and 37 with distal gastric cancer (CA) underwent endoscopic biopsy for the lesser curvature (L/C) and greater curvature (G/C) of midantrum, angle, and the L/C and G/C of midbody. The density of organism, the grade of inflammation and atrophy, and the frequency of intestinal metaplasia were evaluated by Sydney system.
RESULTS
The group with DU showed significantly high grade of chronic inflammation in antrum and angle, and significantly low grade of chronic inflammation and atrophy in body, compared with the group of gastritis. The group of GU showed significantly frequent intestinal metaplasia in antrum and angle, compared with the group of gastritis. The group of CA showed significantly high grade of atrophy in antrum and angle, and significantly frequent intestinal metaplasia in all sites, compared with the group of gastritis.
CONCLUSIONS
Different kinds of H. pylori gastritis are observed according to the gastroduodenal diseases, which provides valuable information to predict the risk of associated diseases.
