A Case of Primary Hepatic Carcinoid Tumor

Abstract
- Primary hepatic carcinoid tumors are extremely rare, although the liver is a most frequent site of metastases from intestinal carcinoids. To our knowledge, only 46 cases of primary hepatic carcinoid have been reported worldwide thus far. We describe here a case of primary hepatic carcinoid tumor in a 71-year-old man who presented a large single mass, 8 cm in the largest diameter, in the liver. Contrast- enhanced computed tomography showed a large mass of low attenuation with central necrosis. On immunohistochemistry, most tumor cells were stained positive with chromogranin and cytokeratin stains. No mass was identified in the gastrointestinal tract and bronchopulmonary system. We present this rare case, describing its clinical features and discussing its diagnosis.
