Abstract
- The prevention of preterm birth has been a principal area of research in obstetrics, because preterm birth is a leading cause of neonatal mortality and morbidities, and is considerable economic burden for the parents and social health systems. Recent clinical studies show that progesterone, generally known as a hormone associated with maintenance of pregnancy, can reduce preterm birth in some selected groups of women. This review presents recent clinical trials and meta-analysis regarding the use of progesterone for the prevention of preterm birth in obstetrics. Further researches are required to determine whether there are other indications and how progesterone actually works, optimal progesterone type, mode of administration and dose for the prevention of preterm birth.
