Clinical Experiences with Bethanidine Sulfate (Esbatal) in the Treatment of Hypertension

Abstract

Twenty seven patients with hypertension of mild to severe degree were treated at Seoul National University Hospital with bethanidine sulfate (Esbatal) for 7 to 92 days (average 21 days) and following results were obtained. 1) The total cases were composed with 16 cases of essential hypertension and 11 cases of renal hypertension. The ratio of male to female was 1:0.8, and the ages were between 27 and 70 years old. 2) The daily effective doses of bethanidine sulfate in the majority of patients ranged from 20 to 120 mg with an average of 55mg. 3) In 78% of the cases, good or fair control of blood pressure was resulted. Most of the poor results were in patients with severe hypertension. Results improved with continued treatment and adjustment of dosage with the addition of reserpine. 4) The major unpleasant subjective symptoms during the medication were postural dizziness and headache, which were improved with reduction in dosage. 5) Bethanidine sulfate is a useful addition to the drugs available for the treatment of hypertension.
