Closing Volume in the Patients with Respiratory Symptoms

Abstract

Conventional spirometry and measurement of closing volume were used to detect small airway disease in 66 persons with respiratory symptoms, consisting of 45 males and 21 females. The following incidence of abnormalities of lung function were found. 1) Forced expiratory volume in one second was abnormal in 30.3 percent of patients. 2) FEF 27-75% was abnormal in 42.4 percent of patients. 3) Closing volume expressed as a percentage of vital capacity was abnormal in 80. 3 percent of patients. The measurement of closing volume has proved to be ￦ell suited for use in a respiratory disease screening program. It is simple, quick to perform and considerably more sensitive than FEV, and FEF 25-75% in detecting small airway abnormality in persons with respiratory symptoms.
