Stress Fractures of the Leg and Shin Splint in the Recruits

Abstract

Clinical observation on 27 cases of stress fracture and shin splint in 220 newly recruited freshmen of the Military Academy, Republic of Korea Army, in Feb., 1964, were done with brief review of literature Thirty five legs were involved totally with eight bilateral involvements. The results are as follows: 1. During the long marching and running, 25 cases developed stress fracture in tibia and in fibula. 2. Eighteen legs among 25 were normal radiologically; periosteal thickening in 15: fracture with cortical cracks in 2. 3. Stress fracture mainly involved the proximal one third of the tibia in this series.
