Tc-99m-MDP bone scan in the diagnosis of bone metastases of malignancy

Abstract

Bone scans with Tc-99,-MDP were analysed in 179 patient with various type of malignant tumor who treated inSeverance Hospital from June 1980 to Jan.1981. The brief results were follows. 1. Among the 179 cases, bone scanswere positive in 111 cases (62%), while only 35 cases (34%) were positive in roentgenogram. 2. In cases ofpositive bone scans and roentgenograms, there showed significant correlation with bone pain but no correlationwith the level of serum calcium and alkaline phsophatase. 3. Distribution of metastases sites on bone scanrevealed that no specific location in each malignant tumors, but prostate cancer showed some prevalance on pelviccavity. 4. In comparison of bone scan and roentgenogram, abnormal bone scan showed positivity in roentgenogramabout 74% and showed negativity about 49%, respectively. As considered above, authors found that bone scan wasmore acurate and sensitive than usual roentgenogram in early detection of bone metastases in malignant tumors.
