A roentgenological study of the normal interpediculate distance in Korean adults

Abstract

Among the various roentgenological examination for the patient with vertebral disease, the routineantero-posterior view of the X-ray film of the spine particularly gave the great contribution and aid for the diagnosis of the intraspinal tumor or congenital stenois of the spinal canal. The author observed the antero-posterior view X-ray films of the 480 normal Korean adults which were composed of 240 males and female seach, and measured the interpediculate distances that were the shortest distance between the inner margin of both right and left pedicle of cervical, thoracic and lumbar vertebrae on the antero-posterior view films, and composed the results by sex and age groups. Statistical analysis of mean values, standard deviation and mean errors of the measured interpediculate distance showed the significance in analysis variance between male and female and that male had greater values than female, but showed no significance in analysis variance between each age groups. Themean values of the normal interpediculate distances in male. 1. The mean values of the normal interpediculate distances in male. a) The cervical vertebrae (C) ; C1-32.78+0.22 mm, C2-25.62+0.11, C3-25.42+0.11 mm, C4-26.88+0.12 mm, C5-27.92+0.13 mm, C6-28.22+0.13 mm, C7-27.00+0.13 mm. b) The thoracic vertebrae (T) ; T1-23.67+0.12 mm, T2-20.36-0.11 mm, T3-18.77+0.10 mm, T4-17.65+0.09 mm, T5-17.27+0.08 mm, T6-17.16+0.09 mm, T7-17.23+0.10 mm, T8-17.34+0.10 mm, T9-17.53+0.11 mm, T10-17.79+0.11 mm, T11-19.28+0.12 mm, T12-22.66+0.13 mm. c) Thelumbar vertebrae (L) ; L1-23.87+0.12 mm, L2-24.84+012 mm, L3-27.52+0.16 mm, L4-27.96+0.14 mm, L5-30.55+0.19 mm. 2. Themean values of the normal interpediculate distances in female. a) The cervical certebrae (C) ; C1-29.85+0.22 mm,C2-24.73+0.11 mm, C3-24.21+0.12 mm, C4-25.08+0.15 mm, C5-26.04+0.13 mm, C6-26.26+0.11 mm, C7-25.16+0.11 mm. b) Thethoracic vertebrae (T) ; T1-22.25+0.12 mm, T2-19.17+0.10 mm, T3-17.81+0.08 mm, T4-16.46+0.09 mm, T5-16.78+0.08 mm, T6-16.72+0.08 mm, T7-16.72+0.09 mm, T8-16.84+0.10 mm, T9-16.85+0.09 mm, T10-17.28+0.10 mm, T11-8.77+0.12 mm, T12-21.80+0.13 mm. c) The lumbar vertebrae (L) ; L1-23.02+0.12 mm, L2-23.67+0.12 mm, L3-24.78+0.12 mm, L4-26.52+0.14 mm, L5-29.70+0.19 mm. Clinically useful 90% tolerance range test were made on the normal values of the interpediculate distance of the Korean male and female. The upper limit of the tolerance range of the Korean adult showed smaller value than those of the American and Europian.
