Abstract

OBJECTIVES
This study is designed to find out the commonly used contraceptive methods and to determine the factors related with the choice of contraceptive methods among Vietnamese female residents (Rs) in CanTho (southern part), Bavi (northern part) and Vietnamese female married immigrants (MIs) in South Korea.
METHODS
A total of 941 Vietnamese women aged 25.52+/-4.37 years were recruited from March 2010 to March 2011. Two-hundred women were Vietnamese female MIs in Korea and the remaining were Vietnamese female Rs in CanTho and Bavi. Data on the location of residence, obstetric history, breast feeding, religion, education, salaries, duration of residency in South Korea and contraceptive methods was collected by using questionnaires. Data are presented as mean+/-standard deviation. The relationships between contraceptive methods and variables were tested by Chi-square test.
RESULTS
The most common method of contraception was the intrauterine device, followed by male condom and oral contraceptive in order. The choice of contraceptive method was related with women's age, the location of residence, gravid, artificial abortion history, and education status (P<0.05). However, the presence of child, spontaneous abortion history, breast feeding, salaries, religion and the duration of residence in South Korea were not related with the contraceptive method.
CONCLUSION
The most common contraceptive method among Vietnamese women was intrauterine device, and the choice of contraceptive method was affected by women's age, the location of residence and gravid (P<0.001).
