Abstract

BACKGROUND/AIMS: There were few epidemiologic surveys of rural communities on the positivities of hepatitis B viral markers. This study was performed to evaluate the positivities of HBsAg and anti-HBs in the rural area of Chonnam Province in Korea and to get the baseline data for the Rural health cohort study.
METHODS
Nine hundred and forty five persons who have been resided in the six rural towns near Lake Juam were selected by multi-stage clutser sampling method from January to February in 1995. HBsAg and anti-HBs were tested by microparticle enzyme immunoassy (MEIA) and alanineaminotrasferase (ALT) was tested by enzyme kinetic method.
RESULTS
The positivities of HBsAg and anti-HBs in all subjects were 9.1% and 53.8%, respectively. The positivity of HBsAg in male (10.6%) was not significantly higher than in female (8.2%). The positivity of anti-HBs in male was 54.5% and also not significantly higher than in female (53.3%). In 86 HBsAg positive cases 68.6% showed normal ALT(< or =35U/L) and remaining 31.4% showed elavated ALT(>35U/L).
CONCLUSIONS
The positivities of HBsAg and anti-HBs showed no significant change compared to those reported in the late 1980's.
