Abstract

Subdural empyema is a rare disease characterized by a collection of pus in the subdural space. This disease causes high mortality or severe neurologic sequelae, therefore, it is very important to detect and treat in the early stages. It usually occurs as a complication of otolaryngologic infections, especially paranasal sinusitis. The prevailing organisms are aerobic streptococci. In addition, anaerobic streptococci, gram negative rod and staphylococci are also documented in the literature. We report here a case of subdural empyema in a 4-month-old male infant. It was caused by E. coli infection secondary to the bacterial meningitis. The patient improved with optimal treatment that consists of surgical drainage and high dose of systemic antibiotics.
