Abstract
OBJECTIVE
Syndecan-1 is transmembrane heparin sulfate proteoglycan that is involved in cell-cell adhesion, organization of cell-matrix adhesion and regulation of growth factor signaling. We tried to evaluate correlation between syndecan-1 expression and conventional risk factors of endometrial cancer.
METHODS
Specimens from 43 endometrial carcinoma cases (34 grade 1, 9 grade>2) with follow up (median, 48months) were immunostained for syndecan-1. Syndecan-1 protein expression also were evaluated in all cases and correlated with conventional risk factors.
RESULTS
Syndecan-1 was expressed at high levels in 16 cases. High syndecan-1 expression was associated with high histologic grade, high surgical stages, lymphovascular space invasion and endometrial thickness(p<0.05). However other conventional risk factors include obesity, unopposed estrogen exposure history, hypertension, DM, age are not associated with high syndecan-1 expression.
CONCLUSION
Syndecan-1 is expressed at high levels in a significant percentage of endometrial carcinoma and is related to pathologic risk factors and poor clinical behavior.
