Comparative Study of Color Dopper US & Power Doppler US in Hepatic Tumors

Abstract

PURPOSE: To compare the power Doppler ultrasound (PDUS) with the color Doppler US (CDUS) in the evaluation of intratumoral vascularity of the hemangiomas, hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs), and hepatic metastases.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
86 patients (38 hemangiomas, 29 HCCs, 19 metastases) were evaluated with PDUS and CDUS. We analyzed the amount of color signals as three groups and categorized the pattern of the color signals as central, peripheral, and mixed type. Then we divided two groups by the depth with criteria of 5cm and correlated amount of the color signals in relation to the depth of hepatic tumors on both PDUS and CDUS. RESULT: PDUS was equal in 44cases (51 %) and superior to CDUS in 36cases (42 to reveal intratumoral vascularity (P<0.05). In 38 hemangiomas, few color signals were seen in 20 cases (53%) on PDUS but color signal was absent in 21 cases (55%) on CDUS, of which discrepancy is prominent features of hemangiomas. In 29 HCCs, few color signals were seen in 13 (45%) and 11 cases (38%) on PDUS and CDUS, respectively. In 19 metastasis, there was no difference in the amount of color signals between them. On PDUS, central type of color signal patterns were more common than peripheral or mixed type in hepatic tumors and seen in 58% of hemangiomas, 59% of HCCs and 26% of metastasis. There was no significant correlation between the amount of color signals and the depth of tumors on PDUS and CDUS, respectively (P > 0.05). CONCLUSlON: PDUS was superior to CDUS in evaluating intratumoral vascularity, particularly the amount and pattern of intratumoral vascularity in hemangiomas and HCCs.
