Abstract

The medical records of 34 patients with acute anterior uveitis were reviewed retrospectively. Forty-seven percents of patients was associated with HLA-B27 antigen. HLA-B27 positive acute anterior uveitis showed following characteristics: unilateral or unilateral alternating involvement, longer duration of activity, severe ocular symptom during active stage such as presence of fibrin in the anterior chamber, and greater requirement of systemic steroid treatment. However, the incidence of ocular complication and long term visual outcome did not differ significantly between two groups. Among HLA-B27 positive patients, 19% of patients were associated with ankylosing spondylitis or rheumatoid arthritis. The HLA-B27 positive group seemed to be highly associated with systemic diseases, although the difference was not statistically significant when compared with HLA-B27 negative group.
