Abstract

Herpes zoster is caused by a reactivation of the latent varicella virus, and develops more frequently in immunocompromised patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections and malignancies. Some herpes zoster patients suffer from severe pain, which requires pain relieving intervention. Sympathetic block in the early phase of herpes zoster has been reported to relieve the pain and prevent post herpetic neuralgia. Here, a case of herpes zoster, with severe pain that did not respond to early sympathetic block is reported. The patient proved to be infected with the HIV.
