Abstract

Myofascial pain syndrome in the cervical and upper back regions is a common medical problem. The involved muscles include the trapezius, multifidi, splenius cervicis, levator scapulae, supraspinatus or infraspinatus. Numerous therapeutic approaches have been used to treat myofascial pain syndrome, with varying success. Botulinum toxin-type A neurolysis may become an important treatment regimen, as it sustains relaxation of the muscles. There is a growing body of clinical evidence for the efficacy of botulinum toxin in the treatment of painful myofascial conditions. Three patients suffering from cervical myofascial pain syndrome were successfully treated with a botulinum toxin-type A injection.
