Abstract

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the prestorage leukocyte removal filter LeukoNet(TM) for red blood cell units. The reduction power of white blood cell and biochemical changes in red blood cell units was investigated before and after filtration. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten units of red blood cells were prepared and filtered by LeukoNetTM. After filtration, we checked the white blood cell, red blood cell, volume, sodium, glucose and pH and compared the changes between pre-and post-filtration.
RESULTS
There was a 99.95% reduction in white blood cell counts and 3.93% of red blood cell loss after filtration. Glucose was also reduced from 184 mg/dL to 98.2 mg/dL. But there was no difference in the sodium, pH.
CONCLUSIONS
The prestorage leukocyte removal filter leukoNet(TM) showed Sufficient leukocyte removal efficiency for red blood cell units. Prestorage leukocyte removal is recommended because of its advantage.
