The Expression of Phospholipase D in Gastric Carcinoma
Abstract
-
BACKGROUND/AIMS: Phospholipase D (PLD) is known to play an important role in cell proliferation and tumorigenesis. The aim of the present study was to examine the relation between PLD expression and gastric carcinoma.
METHODS
Seventy-two cases of gastric carcinoma were examined retrospectively. Samples of human gastric carcinoma were obtained by endoscopy, and their PLD expression was observed by immunohistochemistry using anti-PLD antibody.
RESULTS
We obtained the results from immunohistochemical staining using anti-PLD antibody for endoscopic biopsy samples. The results of immunohistochemical staining showed that the expression of PLD in gastric carcinoma was not correlated to clinical stage and lymph node metastasis (Mantel-Haenszel test, p>0.05). However, PLD was expressed strongly in intestinal type (Lauren classification) and well-differentiated type adenocarcinoma (WHO classification, Mantel-Haenszel test, p<0.05).
CONCLUSIONS
These results suggest that the expression of PLD may play an important role in development and progression of intestinal gastric adenocarcinoma. Because studies on the relation of PLD expression in gastric carcinoma with clinical stage were performed using endoscopic biopsy samples, it is suggested that the measurements of PLD expression and PLD activity in surgical specimens are required to increase the reliability of these results.
