Abstract

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Although there are many controversies, it has been reported that nanobacteria forms the apatite envelopes and can induce not only renal stones but also other calcification diseases such as atherosclerosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether nanobacteria might be related to gallstone disease.
METHODS
This study included twenty seven patients who underwent cholecystectomy due to gallbladder stones and fifty healthy adults without history of gallstone or urinary disease as controls. Age and sex were well matched between both groups. Gallbladder stones in the patients were analyzed with spectrophotometer. Serum nanobacetria antigen was tested by ELISA method.
RESULTS
The incidence of nanobacteria in the controls and the patients were 6% (3/50) and 15% (4/27), respectively (p=0.22). There was no significant difference in the incidence of nanobacteria according to the stone composition.
CONCLUSIONS
Nanobacteria is less likely to be related with gallstone disease.
