Significance of Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1(IGF-1) in the Ascites of the Ovaran Cancer

Abstract


OBJECTIVES
To evaluate the concentration of IGF-1 in the ascites of ovarian cancer patients and to analyze the results with the patients clinical and pathologic prognostic factors. STUDY METHODS: The present study measured the concentration of IGF-1 from 2~3 patients undergoing surgery for ovarian cancer at Hanyang University Hospital ascitic fluid could be obtained. IGF-1 was measurd with radioisotopes. Ascites of nonmalignant origin from 10 patients (liver cirrhosis or preedampsia) were used as the controL The 23 patients underwent chemotherapy with cislatinum following surgery.
RESULTS
The average concentration of IGF-1 in the ascites of the patient group was 820.7ng/ml, a much higher level than the 394.8ng/ml of the control group(p=0.019). The concentration of the IGF-1 increased as the stage and size of the tumor increased, but showed no correlation with other progncstic factors including patient age, twmor differentiation or histologic type, size of residual tumor, serum CA 125 levels or survival rate. The response rate to chemotherapy was greater in patients with lower concentrations of IGF-1.
CONCLUSION
A large amount of IGF-1 exists in the ascites of patients with ovarian cancer, and that this level increases as the size or stage of the tumor increases but has no correlation with other prognostic factors or the survival rate. But we emphasize the need for further studies including levels of IGFBP1-6 and other growth factors with a larger number of patients.
