Abstract

A case of pneumoperitoneum due to spntaneous cecal perforation was presented with a brief review of the related literature. This baby was born via S.N.V.D. with 3.2kg of birth weight and 40 weeks of gestation without birth trauma, asphyxia & hypoxia. From the 2nd day of life there were jaundice, vomiting and progressive abdominal distention followed by respiratory difficulties. The free air was noticed on the abdominal X-ray filem. On the 3rd day Exploratory operation was performed under the impression of the gastric perforation & revealed pin point sized perforation of the cecal wall with the profused meconism in the transverse colon. Microscopy shows ulceration & perforation with acute inflammation of the cecal wall. The patient was discharged on the 27th hospital day without complication.
