Percutaneous Cryotherapy for Inoperable Lung Malignancy

Abstract

PURPOSE
To evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of percutaneous cryotherapy for inoperable patients with malignant pulmonary nodules.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
We enrolled 14 patients (7 males, 7 females, average age 68.8 years) who had inoperable lung malignancy in this study from August 2006 through July 2009. We evaluated the therapeutic efficacy of cryotherapy for complete or incomplete ablation by follow-up chest CT. Using Kaplan-Meier statistical methods, we estimated the survival of patients who had undergone cryotherapy and we investigated post-cryotherapy complications.
RESULTS
Five of the 14 patients underwent complete ablation (35.7%), while 9 of 14 patients underwent incomplete ablation (64.3%). The change in mean size before procedure and at last follow-up CT in the complete and incomplete ablation were as follows: 13.2 +/- 7.6 mm --> 3.8 +/- 2.7 mm, and 18.1 +/- 6.2 mm --> 33.7 +/- 17.9 mm, respectively. The median survival of patients in the complete and the incomplete groups were 51.5 months and 24 months, respectively. One patient developed a small pneumothorax, which resolved spontaneously. Two patients developed hemoptysis after the procedure, which was controlled within a day.
CONCLUSION
Percutaneous cryotherapy may be an effective and safe therapeutic method for inoperable patients with malignant pulmonary nodules.
