Abstract

The antigens of the ABO blood group system (A, B and H determinants) are expressed on red blood cells and on a variety of other cells and tissues including neurons. Recently, evidence is accumulating that ABO antigens may interplay with the pathogenesis of human diseases, including infections, cancers, and cardiovascular diseases. In this review, the possible role of ABO system is elucidated particularly in the ageing-related neurodegenerative disorders including Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, cognitive impairment and longevity.
