Association between Smoking and Albuminuria: The 9th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2022)

Abstract

Background
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with significant health and socioeconomic burdens. Identifying lifestyle factors that influence CKD, such as smoking, is crucial for its prevention and management.
Methods
This study utilized data from the 9th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES, 2022) to explore the association between smoking and albuminuria. A cross-sectional design was employed, including adults aged 19 and older with available data on smoking status and urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio. The primary analysis involved logistic regression to assess the prevalence of albuminuria among current smokers and non-smokers, adjusting for variables such as age, sex, income, alcohol consumption, and physical activity.
Results
The analysis included 3,267 participants, and among regular cigarette smokers, the risk of albuminuria increased with the number of packyears smoked. In contrast, both cigarette-type and liquid-type electronic cigarette use did not show a statistically significant association with albuminuria after adjusting for confounding variables.
Conclusion
This study showed a significant association between regular cigarette smoking and the occurrence of albuminuria, suggesting that smoking may have a negative impact on kidney health and emphasizing the importance of smoking cessation. Further research using new approaches is needed to better understand the impact of electronic cigarettes.
