Abstract

Ceftriaxone, a third-generation cephalosporin that is excreted from bile duct, has been associated with the development of sludge or stones in the gallbladder for some patients treated with this medication. Although it is usually asymptomatic and resolved spontaneously after discontinuation of causative antibiotic, it can induce severe complication including cholecystitis and pancreatitis. Therefore, the possibility of ceftriaxone- induced gallstone should be considered in patients with appropriate clinical context to make timely evaluation and optimal management. We report a case of 16-year-old Korean adolescent female with symptomatic gallstones developed by ceftriaxone who was successfully treated by conservative care.
