Effects of Striking and Bone Conditions on Damping Capacity Assessment: An in vitro Study

Abstract

Purpose
This study aimed to evaluate the changes in damping capacity according to the striking and bone conditions of implants placed in a porcine rib using two devices (Periotest; Medizintechnik and AnyCheck; Neobiotech).
Materials and Methods
In the first experiment, 20 implant fixtures were placed on porcine ribs and connected at three healing abutment heights (3.0, 4.0, and 5.0 mm). The damping capacities were measured in different vertical angles (0° and +30°) and horizontal directions (mesiobuccal, midbuccal, and distobuccal). The second experiment involved 20 implant fixtures placed on the porcine ribs for bone dehiscence, where the damping capacity was measured only in different horizontal directions (mesiobuccal, midbuccal, and lingual).
Results
In the first experiment, lower stability values were observed with higher healing abutment heights and lower vertical angles (p < .05). The horizontal striking direction did not show a difference in the damping capacity value of implants surrounded by intact bone (p > .05) but showed a significant difference in implants with buccal dehiscence defects (p < .05).
Conclusion
Striking direction and peri-implant bone conditions can affect Periotest and AnyCheck values. To obtain reproducible values, it is necessary to assess the damping capacity according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
