A Study on Tuberculosis Mortality Rate in Seoul and Kyong gi Province, 1968

Abstract

The survey on Tuberculosis deaths was conducted during three months from January to March 1968 in Seoul and four areas of Kyong gi province to study the mortality rate of Tuberculosis. In Seoul city, this sort of survey has been carried out annually since 1963 by the Association. In Kyong gi province, four areas, namely Soo Won city, Ko Yang Gun, Kim PO Gun and Si Hung Gun, were selected to get a rough idea of the tuberculosis deaths rate in the province. The data was analyzed especially on the items of sex, occupation, onset, diag nosers, month of death, death by organ, place of death and age-specific cleath for those who died from tuberculosis during the period of January, 1967 to the end of the year. 1) The Tuberculosis mortality rate was 39.5 and 25.5 per 100, 000 population in Seoul and Kyong gi province respectively. 2) By Sex, the rate was 49.3 in male and 29.1 in female in Seoul City, while 29. 4 in male and 21.5 in female in Kyong gi province. 3) According to the month of death, the rate was higher in the Winter than in the Spring and the Summer season. 4) In the proportion of death by organ, the highest rate was from pulmonary tuberculosis with 86.0 % and 81. 9% in Kyong gi province and Seoul respectively. 5) For the distribution by duration between onset and death, 2 year cases were highest and the lowest was 10 year cases. 6) For the distribution of TB death by whom death certificates were written, most of the diagnosis were made by qualified medical doctors, but sti1l 3.8% of them were macle by Herb doctors in Seoul and 14.9% by Herb doctors in Kyong gi province. 7) By the place of death, Institutional deaths were 13.9% and 13.2% in Seoul and Kyong gi province respectively. The majority of deaths were at home. 8) Regarding the distribution of the death by occupation, sales workers were the highest proportion except those without occupation or occupation was not recorded.
