Abstract

We reviewed 193 cases of pulmonary tuberculosis among 1, 058 diabetic inpatients admitted between March 1981-September 1984 and 942 diabetic outpatients enrolled between April 1983-0ctober 1984 and obtained following results: 1) The prevalence rate of pulmonary tuberculosis was 9.6 % among outpatient group and 9.8 % among inpatient group. 2) The prevalence rate of tuberculous lesion was higher in male group than in female group by the ratio of 2.2 : 1 among out patients and the prevalence rate of pulmonary tuberculosis among inpatients had 3.3 : 1 male to female ratio. But the age specific male/ female ratio did not differ much from that of tuberculosis among general population. 3) The prevalence rate of pulmonary tuberculosis was higher among study group than among general population only in 4 th and 5 th decade age groups (14-15 %) (p<0.005). 4) Of all the pulmonary tuberculoses among diabetic inpatients about 80% was active and about half(52% ) of which showed AFB positive on sputum smear alone. 5) The prevalence rate of far advanced pulmonary tuberculosis was higher among the diabetics whose initial fasting blood sugar level was above 250 mg % (36.5%) than amon g those whose initial fasting blood sugar level was below 250 mg % (1 7. 2%) (p
