A Study on Tuberculin Positive Rates According to the Presence of Pulmonary Tuberculosis Patients in the Household

Abstract

The purpose of the study is the comparison of tuberculin positive rate between household members with and without tuberculosis patients. The data collected for the 4th and 5th Nation-wide Tuberculosis prevalence surveys is in 1980 and 1985 were used for the test. As the result of this survey, the following conclusions were obtained 1) The tuberculin reactors (≥ 10 mm) without BCG scar, aged 0-14 years was 63.9% to family members with direct smear positive T.B. patients, 32.1 % with only culture positive T.B. patients, 20.3% with sputum negative radiologically active T.B. patients, 10.3% without T.B. patient. 2) The Mean and Standard Error of tuberculin reaction size without BCG scar, aged 10-14 years were 9.2 mm and 0.9 mm to household members with sputum positive T .B. patients, 4.3 mm and 0.4mm with sputum negative radiologically active T.B. patients, 2.1 mm and 0.1 mm without T.B. patient. 3) In Case-Control study, Odd Ratio between the reactors without BCG scar, aged 0-14 years was 2.8 times higher among those whose family members had tuberculosis patients than among those whose family members had no tuberculosis patient.
