Abstract

Purpose
The purpose of this study was to describe nurses' experience of near misses in medication errors.
Methods
Data were collected from April, 3 to October 30, 2019 through in-depth interviews with nine nurses who had worked in hospitals. Data was analyzed using Colaizzi's phenomenological methodology.
Results
The three themes that emerged from the analysis were: Shameful things to hide, Inevitable matter to happen, and Step to move forward.
Conclusion
The result has shown that nurses' experience of near misses in medication administration has happened not only because of individual matters but also institutional problems. Therefore, to improve the situation and prevent serious medication errors for nurses, both, individual and institutional problems need to be assessed, analyzed and change.
