Report of a Case of Synovial Chondromatosis in Hip

Abstract

This is a case of 22 years old male with synovial chondromatosis involving the left hip joint. Chief complaints were gradual development of pain and disturbance of motion on the affected joint of two years duration. The X-ray study revealed numerous radio-opaque loose bodies filling the joint cavity. Histologic study showed several round cartilagenous nodules within the synovial membrane and evidence of active growth was observed. The loose bodies in the Joint cavity were frequently calcified or ossified in addition to cartilage formation. The diagnosis of synovial chondromatosis was made based upon the histopathological findings e.g., multiple metaplastic foci of cartilage in the synovial membrane, as defined by the majority of the previous reporters as the most important diagnostic criteria. Total synovectomy of the joint with complete eradication of the fallen loose bodies brought clinical cure with roentgenologic regression of the degenrative joint changes.
