Rupture of the Achilles Tendon

Abstract

Rupture of Achilles tendon was first reported by Pare, 1575 and thereafter the cause and the diagnostic and therapeutic methods of the ruptured tendon have been described by many workers. Rupture of the Achilles tendon is often wrongly diagnosed and inadequately treated by the doctor who first sees it, with consequent problems of treatment and prognosis. In this paper 24 patients(25 cases) -18 men and 6 women, who had sustained rupture of the Achilles tendon are considered and a follow-up study of 16 cases has been made during 14 years from August 1957 to October 1971. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The youngest patient was a girl of four and the oldest a man of fifty-four. 2. Rupture of the Achilles tendon occured most commonly in men of the 4th and 5th decade. 3. Rupture by indirect injury was more common then by direct injury by 1.5 times. 4. The most frequent site of rupture was 2-5cm. above the insertion of the tendon (84%). 5. The results of end-to-end repair within one week of injury were excellent and the results from reconstructive surgery after more than one week were excellent. 6. The results by the method of Lindholm within 2 months of injury were gratifying. 7. The method of Bugg and Boyd was good for an old repture with a large gap between the ruptured ends. 8. Normal function of the Achilles tendon can be regained about 6 months after operation.
