A case of anticonvulsant hypersensitivity syndrome induced by carbamazepine
Abstract
- Anticonvulasants including carbamzepine can cause rarely a characteristic hyersensitivity reaction. This multisystem reaction typically presents as fever, skin eruptions, lymphadenopathy, hematologic abnormality and hepatitis but it's mechanism remains unknown. There is cross reactivity between different anticonvulsants, which compliccates subsequent therapy. We re port a rare case of carbamazepine induced anti convulsant hypersensitivity syndrome characterized by severe hepatitis, lymphadenopathy, atypical lymphoctyosis, eosmophilnistered for 37 days. Fever and skin rashes were developed 6 days after the discontinuation of carbamazepine. He was started on prednisolone 60mg daily. 40 days after discontinuation of carbamazepine, he was recovered and prednisolone was gradually withdrawn.
