A survey of airborne fungal spores in Seoul, Korea

Abstract

Fungal spores have been known as one of the causative allergens in respiratory allergy patients. To investigate the distribution of airborne fungal spores in Seoul, Korea, the spore counts collected using a rotorod sampler were identified by a light microscope from June, 1990 to July, 1992. Total spore counts had two distinct peaks: one was noted from May to June and the other peak was in September, which was associated with a degree of relative humidity. Altenaria spp. was the most prevalent one. Stemphylium spp., Periconia Spp, Drechslera spp., Fusariurn spp. were next in order. This study indicates that there are two distinct fungal spore periods in Seoul, Korea: one in May and June, the other in September.
