Comparative analysis of double contrast study and endoscopy in early gastric cancer

Abstract

To asssess the diagnostic accuracy of the double contras upper gastrointestinal series(UGI), we have done aretrospective analysis of pathologically proven 92 cases of early gastric cancer (ECC) during the period between March 1981 and February 1986. The results were as follows: 1. The diagnostic accuracy of EGC was 66% on UGI and 62% on fiberscopy. 2. The radiological diagnosis (UGI) of 92 cases was EGC in 61 cases, advanced cancer in 15cases, cancer invaded in the muscle layer in 7 cases(PM cancer), benign ulcer in 8 cases and polyp in 1 case. 3.The commonest type was type IIc(40%), and the second commonest type was IIc+III. As many EGC's present withulceration, any ulcerating lesion should be carefully evaluated keeping the possibility of EGC in mind. 4. Therate of lymph node metastasis was 7%, and higher in EGC's with submucosal invasion, indepresed and large lesions.
