CT-guided fine needle aspirations

Abstract

Percutaneous needle aspiration biopsy is a widely used method for obtaining specimens for cytologic,bacteriologic, or histologic examination. Because of the ability of CT scans ot precisely localize lesions andbiopsy needles, along with the delineation of adjacent structures, diaignositc fine-needle aspiration underCT-guidance has become a quite safe and highly accurate procedure. 62 diagnostic find-needle aspirations wereperformed in order to diagnose a suspected neoplastic or infectious disease. Most of these procedures wereperformed but not limited to, the lung (24 cases )liver (15 cases), intraabdominal sites(9 cases ), kidney (5 cases ), pancreas (3 cases ), and spine (2 cases ). The overall accuracy for both suspected malignant and infectious disease was 91%. An increase in sampling accuracy was demonstarated when there was immediate evaluationof the aspirated material by a cytopathologist using a "fast" stain techniques.
