Roentgenologic study of idiopathic scoliosis

Abstract

Roentgenograms of 44 cases of idiopathic scoliosis treated at Yonsei and Hanyang University Hospital during the period of Jan. 1963 to aug. 1977 were reviewed. The results were as follows; 1. Cases examined were 18 maleand 26 female patients. 27 out of 44 cases were 12 to 17 years old adolescent. 2. Thoracic curve was the most common primary curve and was observed in 78.5% of cases. 3. The convex side of the primary curve was right side in33 cases and left in 11 cases. 4. More than half of cases had angle of the primary curve under 39 degrees, and 11%of cases, over 80 degrees. 5. The numbers of the vertebral bodies involved in the priamry curve were 6 to 7 in 21 cases and 8 to 9 in 17 cases. 6. The degrees of rotation and wedging of vertebral bodies were gradually increased accoridng to the angle of the primary curve. 7. The average angle difference of the primary curve in supine anderect position was 9.2 degrees and there was no correlation with age, sex, curve pattern and angle of the primary curve.
