A study of radiographic determination of total lung capacity in the normal korean pre-school children

Abstract

Determination of total lung capacity (TLC) has been widely used in evaluation of the pulmonary function. Aroentenographic method for the determination of total lung capacity of preschool children has been studied. Thismethod requires PA and lateral views of chest and consists principally of the summatiion of series of ellipticalcylindroids into which the lungs are divided. The measurements and calculations of total lung capacity byradiographic method were carried out in 96 cases of normal Korean pre-school children, 51 male, 45 female. Theresults were obtained as follow; 1. As a whole the calculated value of TLC in male was larger than that in femal, the mean value of TLC in female 68.4% of that in male. 2. The standard deviation of height and body weight are+337 ml in male and +284 ml in female. 3. The TLC tended to show a gradual increse as height increased. A linearrelationship found between the variables of height and TLC was 0.74 in term of coefficient of correlation. theconfidence interval for the coefficient of correlaion was from +0.65 to +0.84 at 95 per cent confidence level. 4. there is no significant correlation between the value of TLC and body weight.
