Radiological observation of laryngography for laryngeal cancer in pre and post irradiation

Abstract

Irradiation at the Yonsei Cancer Center was carried out in 54 patients with laryngeal cancer. Of these 54 patients, 23 were reviewed in respect of tumor regression on the laryngogram after radiation therapy. On thelaryngogram, minimal degree of tumor regression were observed in patients of 4 cases in supraglottic cancer, 1case of glottic cancer and 6 cases of transglottic cancer. And, moderate degree of tumor regression was observedin patients of 2 and 8 cases in the supraglottic regions respectively. The value of the roentgenographic study ofthe larynx and hypopharynx lies in the determination of the precise anatomical location of the lesion, as well asits size and extent, and the delineation of involvement of adjacent structures. The degree of functionalimpairment of the involved structures can also be demonstrated. The roentgen findings confirm and supplement theclinical observations. Therefore, the contrast examination of laryngopharynx is invaluable to the radiotherapistand the otolaryngologist for diagnosis, treatment planning and follow-up studies of tumors of the larynx andhypopharynx.
