Inguinal herniography in adults

Abstract

Inguinal hernia inchildren is easily diagnosed in most cases; however, it is sometimes difficult or impossibleto detect by physical examination. The some is true of a contralateral asymptomatic hernia. White have reportedthat herniography is easy to perform and has a high degree of accuracy and minimal morbidity. The diagnosticaccuracy of herniography indetection of patent process vaginalis is 95-98% by white. Rowe found 40% of childrenover age of 2 years and adults with a unilateral congenital hernia ahd an open process vaginalis in contralateralnormal site and he concluded that 20% of patients with a unilateral hernia will develop a contralateral herniasometime during life. It is nessary to check the condition of the normal site before surgery in unilateral herniaby herniogram. But in adults, the hernigraphy was not performed due to some reasion. We found that theherniography in adults is also easy to perform and high degree of accuracy. The results are; 1. Total number ofstudies are 25 patients of unilateral inguinal hernia. 2. We found 32% of adults male with unilateral hernia hadan open process vaginalis in contralateral normal site. 3. Slight more abdominal discomfort than children is notedduring injection of Hypaque. 4. Prominent lateral recess of Douglas pouch and poor coating of contrast media toperitoneum are different radiologic finding from children.
