Abstract

OBJECTIVES
This study was investigated to evaluate the association between production of interleukin (IL)-8, IL-18, soluble IL-8 receptor (sIL-18R) from whole blood cells (WBCs) from women with and without endometriosis (ES).
METHODS
The production of IL-8, IL-18, and sIL-18R by lipopolysaccharide-stimulated WBCs from women with ES (n=23) and normal women without ES (n=24) were determined by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay.
RESULTS
No significant differences in the production of IL-8 by WBCs were noted between women with ES and normal control women. The production of IL-18 and sIL-18R by WBCs from women with ES was significantly (P<0.005) lower than those of normal control women respectively. These differences were not noted in early stage ES but in advanced stage ES.
CONCLUSION
The IL-18 and sIL-18R production by WBCs was significantly lower in women with ES than in normal controls. This result is related with decreased immune response in women with ES.
