Efficacy and Tolerability of Pantoprazole-based Triple Therapy in Eradication of Helicobacter pylori in Patients with Peptic Ulcer and/or Gastritis
Abstract
-
BACKGROUND/AIMS: The present study was designed to investigate the efficacy and tolerability of a one-week triple therapy consisted of pantoprazole, clarithromycin and amoxicillin for cure of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in patients with peptic ulcer and gastritis.
METHODS
Forty-two patients with peptic ulcer or gastritis who were H. pylori-positive received one-week triple therapy consisted of pantoprazole 40 mg, clarithromycin 500 mg, and amoxicillin 1 g (twice daily). H. pylori infection was assessed by rapid urease test and histology at the start and 4 weeks after the completion of treatment.
RESULTS
H. pylori was not detected in 31 out of 35 patients who completed the trial according to the protocol and in 31 of 42 patients involved in this study. Four weeks after the completion of treatment, 14 of 16 patients with peptic ulcer was cured (87.5%). Twenty-one (50%) patients reported adverse events which were mostly mild to moderate.
CONCLUSION
One-week treatment of pantoprazole-based triple therapy is well tolerated and effective in eradication of H. pylori.
